The Wool Against Weapons project was founded by Jaine Rose as part of a programme of actions with Action AWE. The project is supported by and co-organised with CND. The concept of knitting a 7 mile long scarf to connect the UK’s two nuclear weapons factories at Aldermaston and Burghfield is described in the quote from Jaine, below.
“Well hello world….and hello stitchers! Here is my long awaited plan!
I am Jaine Rose, and I would like to share with you my thoughts on launching a crazy and rather wonderful direct action protest involving 7 miles of pink wool. Interested? Then read on…..
Back in October 2012 I hatched a plan with Angie Zelter from Action AWE to get a huge crowd of knitters and crocheters together to knit a massive, and I mean SUPER LONG knitted Peace Scarf to run between the Women’s Peace Camp at Aldermaston and Burghfield (the other Nuclear Weapons Establishment site) in Berkshire. It will be one big old woolly protest against the U.K’s ongoing involvement with nuclear weapons, and the money our Government is intending to spend in 2016. There’s a lot more about the WHY? of this idea on my ‘About’ page.” - Jaine Rose
Knitters from all over the UK, Europe & the wider world quickly became involved with knitting the scarf in thousands of segments and have been busy stitching them together. The result is that the 7 mile scarf will be rolled out between AWE Aldermaston & AWE Burghfield on Saturday 9th August 2014. Following the event the scarf will be turned into blankets and distributed to needy people around the world. Please come and take part or support what will be a wonderful colourful day with a strong message to governments that tax payer’s money should be spent in areas of need, not on immoral illegal weapons of mass destruction.
The Wool Against Weapons website will have regularly updated news and information about the event, as will the CND website which has many useful links and resources, including information about coaches and travel to the event. Here at Action AWE we will post all new information as it becomes available.
