Welsh Dragon to Roar its Protest at County Hall
A giant Welsh Dragon will be accompanied by the Dragonistas, all members of Knighton Action for Peace and Justice, when it presents its concerns to Powys County Council on Friday at 3 p.m. The fiery, poetic dragon has eloquently embellished her large envelope in the following manner:
‘COUNCILLORS OF POWYS! Do not let them waste our precious gold on Trident. This destructive contaminating indiscriminate weapon is an ignoble choice, a foolish choice - it leaves us with a poor land and a poorer spirit.’
“Well, I completely agree with the dragon”, says Kate MacDermott, one of the Dragonistas,
whilst another, Angie Zelter of Knighton, adds:
“The majority of the world’s states want nuclear disarmament. The next Government will decide whether or not to replace Trident. The voters of Wales should only elect MPs who will vote NO to replacement. This is our chance to ensure that Britain implements the anti-nuclear treaties it has signed and takes a lead in ending nuclear proliferation.”
Richard Beasley, a Dragonista from Presteigne, said that people needed to consider the enormous cost of replacement:
“We must all face the reality that Britain does not need and cannot afford such a monstrous extravagance. Wales is a peaceful country and we certainly should not be using our tax revenue to buy weapons of mass destruction, especially in a time of extreme economic crisis.”
But there is no rest for the protestors. On October 3rd, the Dragon and its friends will be joining forces with other dragons from all around Wales to blockade the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Burghfield, Berkshire, where the Trident nuclear warheads are assembled and maintained.
