Ban the Bomb-Makers!
Gwahardd Adeiladwyr y Bom!
CND Cymru activists from across Wales will be protesting at and blockading the Atomic Weapons Establishment (AWE) Burghfield from 7.00am on Monday March 2nd. In what they are calling the ‘Burghfield Lockdown’ and alongside others from across Britain, they will be calling for Trident nuclear weapons to be scrapped and plans to replace it to be abandoned.
This non-violent direct action intends to disrupt nuclear weapons work at AWE Burghfield. The protest marks the start of a month of protest action, focussing public attention on British Government proposed new generation of nuclear weapons.
“Although we’re told that the vote on new nuclear weapons will not be taken until 2016, we know that work has already started on their design” said Jan Jones of Pontardawe, one of the group travelling up from west Wales.
“The money that is proposed to be spent on new nuclear weapons could pay for scrapping all student tuition fees for 30 years, or could fund all Accident and Emergency departments in the UK for over 40 years. People should be aware that at a time when the vast majority are suffering “austerity”, we are beginning to spend horrifying amounts of money on something that at best we shall never use, and at worst could kill over one hundred million people.”
“The British government is currently spending £95 every second on nuclear weapons. Money spent on nuclear weapons is money that can’t be spent on our health service, causing real harm to people”,
added CND Cymru Vice Chair Brian Jones.
“All but ten countries in the world want to ban nuclear weapons, just as chemical and biological weapons have been banned. Our government should be supporting moves to ban nuclear weapons, not building more of them.”

CND Cymru is part of Action AWE (Atomic Weapons Eradication) - a grassroots peace campaign dedicated to banning and eradicating nuclear weapons. They have come together as groups and individuals to undertake non-violent action, education and outreach to raise awareness of the humanitarian, health and security consequences of nuclear weapons and halt nuclear warhead production by the Atomic Weapons Establishment nuclear bomb facilities at Aldermaston and Burghfield. Linking local and international campaigning for sustainable security, environmental protection, economic justice and peace, Action AWE mobilises for concerted, persistent, politically effective actions to highlight and prevent the deployment and renewal of Trident, and to build public and parliamentary pressure for Britain to disarm and join other countries in negotiating a global treaty to ban nuclear weapons.
