Directions to the TP/Action AWE Disarmament Camp

Burghfield_camp_2013At 2am on Sunday, 25 August, anti-nuclear campaigners established the Trident Ploughshares/Action AWE Disarmement Camp just outside AWE Burghfield. So far, the atmosphere is relaxed and peaceful, but police have for now blocked off car access at both ends of The Mearings.

The address of the camp is:
The Mearings
Burghfield

Please join the camp. Park your car nearby and walk to the camp. One option is to park near Burghfield church, and walk from there. Walk through the church yard and take the left footpath at the end, heading directly towards the base.

We now have an agreement with the police about disabled access. If the driver is disabled, he or she can drive up to the camp. If one of the passengers is disabled, the passenger can be dropped of at the camp, and the car then parked outside. In case of problems, call the info line (see below).

If you come by public transport, bus 2 and/or 2A from Reading Station goes via Burghfield (ask the driver). Get off at Burghfield church, and continue as above. Or get off at AWE Burghfield, and walk past the police checkpoint towards the main gate and continue for 4 minutes along the road until you reach the camp. Buses run roughly every 30 minutes (less frequently in the evening after 8pm) until 22:35. Timetable here.
If you need help, call the camp info line on 08454-588362 or 08454-588361.

At the moment, police are requesting from those camping a name and address, as they consider us in breach of the AWE Burghfield byelaws. A name and address are needed for the purpose of prosecution of the breach of the byelaws. It is unclear if they will really prosecute - a similar provision in the byelaws of AWE Aldermaston was squashed by the Supreme Court 2009 (see http://www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWCA/Civ/2009/23.html and our press release.
It is perfectly legal to walk on the controlled area (MOD land), and you do not give your name or address. It is also perfectly legal to visit the camp - but there is a gray area of what constitutes camping and what is only a visit.

See you soon at the camp.

Ken Loach

“Spending £100 billion on replacing Trident is a catastrophic folly. I’m sure I am one of many who support the those, like Action-AWE, who campaign actively and imaginatively against it”

– Ken Loach

John Hurt

".....the government has pledged to rebuild a new generation of British nuclear weapons at enormous cost and at a time when social services budgets including those for health and education are being drastically cut. Having nuclear weapons doesn't make us safer, it just brings the possibility of nuclear conflict ever closer. We need to protect this planet not put it at even more risk of destruction. We all have a voice so please use yours and join me in supporting ACTION AWE." John Hurt
