The illegality of the UK’s nuclear weapons partnership with the US

From the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty, to which the UK is a signatory - the very first article of the treaty…..

NPT Article I:

Each nuclear-weapon State Party to the Treaty undertakes not to transfer to any recipient whatsoever nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices or control over such weapons or explosive devices directly, or indirectly; and not in any way to assist, encourage, or induce any non-nuclear-weapon State to manufacture or otherwise acquire nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices, or control over such weapons or explosive devices.

See the way the UK government hides details of its nuclear weapons business with the United States under the blanket of the 1958 Mutual Defence Agreement.

When the United States can publish military nuclear business dealings as an unclassified document why is the UK government permitted, by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to be so secretive? The UK, under voluntary arrangement makes its civil nuclear business accessible to the IAEA. Why hasn’t the IAEA reported the UK and the US for being in breach of the NPT and refusing compliance with the treaty on the basis of its military nuclear business?

“Spending £100 billion on replacing Trident is a catastrophic folly. I’m sure I am one of many who support the those, like Action-AWE, who campaign actively and imaginatively against it”

– Ken Loach

John Hurt

".....the government has pledged to rebuild a new generation of British nuclear weapons at enormous cost and at a time when social services budgets including those for health and education are being drastically cut. Having nuclear weapons doesn't make us safer, it just brings the possibility of nuclear conflict ever closer. We need to protect this planet not put it at even more risk of destruction. We all have a voice so please use yours and join me in supporting ACTION AWE." John Hurt
