Reading Peace Group vigil at AWE Burghfield - 23rd March 2015

Supporters of Reading Peace Group had an early start to the day, heading down to the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Burghfield to conduct a morning peace vigil to greet AWE staff as they turned up for work - our local contribution to the Marchmonth of action.
???????????????????????????????
We set up at the Burghfield Road entrance to The Mearings lane which leads to the main gate, by the checkpoint which has been set up by police to control access to the gate. Although we had more banners than people present, the morning was a success - we attracted quite a bit of attention from passing drivers and, of course, all AWE staff entering the site had a reminder of the opposition to nuclear weapons as they began the week at work.

Ken Loach

“Spending £100 billion on replacing Trident is a catastrophic folly. I’m sure I am one of many who support the those, like Action-AWE, who campaign actively and imaginatively against it”

– Ken Loach

John Hurt

".....the government has pledged to rebuild a new generation of British nuclear weapons at enormous cost and at a time when social services budgets including those for health and education are being drastically cut. Having nuclear weapons doesn't make us safer, it just brings the possibility of nuclear conflict ever closer. We need to protect this planet not put it at even more risk of destruction. We all have a voice so please use yours and join me in supporting ACTION AWE." John Hurt
