A lively group of singers will serenade shoppers in the busy Market Square this Saturday. They have come together from several choirs in London, Reading, Oxford and Cardiff and their aim is to make people more aware of the issues around the upcoming decision whether or not to replace Trident, Britain’s nuclear “deterrent”.
The submarines are stationed at Faslane, in south west Scotland, but are manufactured, assembled and maintained nearby at Aldermaston and Burghfield. The current government says the decision will be made whether to replace the present ones, which are nearing their sell-by date, after the next election, in 2016.It looks as if they think the decision has already been made, and will just need to be rubber-stamped, but in fact surveys of the British public show that 80% are against the renewal of Trident once they are made aware of the issues. Even some army generals have said a British nuclear deterrent is irrelevant and unnecessary in the current situation.
What is not usually made clear is that the replacement cost, including ongoing maintenance, would be £100 billion. In these times of austerity, many people are realising that this makes no sense .Instead of spending all this money on weapons of mass destruction that we will hopefully never use, but whose existence is dangerous to us all, it could be spent on renewable energy to reduce climate change, health care and education, creating jobs which sustain life.
There will be a variety of songs, sung in harmony without accompaniment, There will also be leaflets distributed and an opportunity to engage in discussion of the issues.
We expect to be singing in the outdoor Market Square in Basingstoke from 11am - 1 pm and again from 2 pm- 4pm on Sat. 23rd November.
