Seven-mile pink scarf protesting against Trident

A seven-mile pink scarf knitted by more than 5,000 people from around Britain and beyond was unfurled between the two Berkshire atomic bomb factories on Saturday.

The peace-knitters were calling on Parliament not to renew the Trident nuclear weapons system when the decision arises again in 2016.

The event was the latest demonstration against Trident at the Atomic Weapons Establishment.

The sites in Aldermaston and Burghfield have been increasingly targeted by protestors as the General Election approaches in May 2015.

The demonstrators contrast the cost of renewing Trident, which be up to £100bn, with the heavy cuts to public services and social security.

The sections of the scarf, which have been displayed individually in towns around the UK, were linked together for the seven mile stretch at 1pm on Saturday.

The date was chosen as the anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945.

The hundreds of people holding up the scarf observed two minutes’ silence for the victims of nuclear weapons.

The knitters included people from all parts of the UK, as well as Kenya, South Africa, France, Austria, the Middle East, parts of South America and elsewhere.

The Wool Against Weapons initiative was backed by Action AWE and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).

It was the brainchild of Angie Zelter, of Knighton in Powys, and Jaine Rose, of Stroud in Gloucestershire.

Ms Zelter, co-founder of Action AWE, said: “This is just the start of people’s mobilisation.

“People have to act because the Government won’t disarm without people in their thousands taking to the streets.

“Spending £100 billion on replacing Trident is a catastrophic folly. I’m sure I am one of many who support the those, like Action-AWE, who campaign actively and imaginatively against it”

John Hurt

".....the government has pledged to rebuild a new generation of British nuclear weapons at enormous cost and at a time when social services budgets including those for health and education are being drastically cut. Having nuclear weapons doesn't make us safer, it just brings the possibility of nuclear conflict ever closer. We need to protect this planet not put it at even more risk of destruction. We all have a voice so please use yours and join me in supporting ACTION AWE." John Hurt
