Knitting for Nuclear Disarmament at the Clock Tower in Knighton
from 10.30am on Saturday 17th August
Once again, Knighton Action for Peace and Justice are knitting in support of WOOL AGAINST WEAPONS, a project of Action AWE. Their aim is to complete, by next August, a scarf 120 yards long which will stretch from Knighton Clock Tower to the Cenotaph. It will then be joined with lengths from towns all over to make a massive scarf that will be unrolled between the two Atomic Weapons Establishments at Aldermaston and Burghfield, a distance of 7 miles. The scarf will then be de-constructed to make blankets for disaster aid and hospices.
Angie Zelter, a member of the Knighton group, explains why people are doing this and why others should join them:
“This is a creative and nonviolent way to show the government that we do not want to spend our tax money on nuclear weapons. If we replace Trident it will only encourage other countries to want their own nuclear weapons. The Iranians will not unreasonably ask “If Britain is buying an even more deadly weapons system, why on earth shouldn’t we have one to defend ourselves?” Instead of spending millions on a new weapon system we should be respecting international law and disarming our nuclear weapons in line with our obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty. If we want peace and justice then we should act peacefully and with justice. Our governments literally get away with murder because we let them and do not protest enough.”
