PRESS RELEASE (for immediate release)
THE SEVEN MILE SCARF
Knighton knitters will be purling and plaining in the town’s Narrows on Easter Saturday. A grand knit-in, open to all comers, will be producing a small section of what will eventually become a seven mile-long Peace Scarf but first the Clock Tower will be draped in a pink muffler.
The event is an initiative of “Wool against Weapons” and is just one small part of a massive grassroots campaign, Action AWE, which intends to get Britain to dispense with its Trident nuclear missiles. Knitters from all over the country will be doing their bit.
In August 2014 the enormous scarf will be stretched between the two sites of the Atomic Weapons Establishment, at Aldermaston and Burghfield in Berkshire, which produce Britain’s nuclear weapons. Job done, it will be cut up and made into blankets for hospices and refugees from conflict. Angie Zelter of Knighton, one of the organisers, explained the message of the scarf. “This warm, soft, benign symbol of human skill, industry and co-operation will be seen in stark contrast to the cold, dark, hard weapons of death.”
The organisers are calling on all knits, knitters and knotters – crochet-makers welcome too – to bring along needles (7/8 metric) and pink or red double knitting wool. Like to learn how to knit? Skilled knitters will be there to help beginners. Needles will begin to click and clack at 10.30 am on Easter Saturday, 30th March. Further details from Julia on 01547 529530.
