Draft letter to help people contact their MPs

Dear MP
I am writing to you as I have just received an email from a friend who has taken action against the UKs nuclear weapons. She/he is knitting against nuclear weapons / or has demonstrated against them at AWE Aldermaston/AWE Burghfield (or whatever the Action AWE event was) I attach a photo of my friend’s protest.

This has brought the issue of nuclear weapons to my attention and as I think…… choose from any of from the following or write your own reasons:

  1. that to build these weapons of mass destruction is the most ridiculous waste of money. It costs £3million a day to keep AWE going.
  2. that to spend £76billion or more over the next 30years is dreadful in the light of the present austerity. Especially on a weapon that is used more for its political effect and can no longer be justified militarily.
  3. I would so much prefer that this money were used to ensure that we look after the people of this country properly and increased the jobs and prosperity for all.
  4. I am told that senior military personnel say there is no place in a modern arsenal for nuclear weapons so surely we really don’t need these weapons of mass destruction ?
  5. I am concerned about the safety at AWE and also the transport of the warheads from AWE to Coulport in Scotland.

Please can you tell me where you stand in relation to Britain’s nuclear weapons in general and the replacement of Trident in particular?

If you receive a response please send it to [email protected] for posting on the ActionAWE website

Ken Loach

“Spending £100 billion on replacing Trident is a catastrophic folly. I’m sure I am one of many who support the those, like Action-AWE, who campaign actively and imaginatively against it”

– Ken Loach

John Hurt

".....the government has pledged to rebuild a new generation of British nuclear weapons at enormous cost and at a time when social services budgets including those for health and education are being drastically cut. Having nuclear weapons doesn't make us safer, it just brings the possibility of nuclear conflict ever closer. We need to protect this planet not put it at even more risk of destruction. We all have a voice so please use yours and join me in supporting ACTION AWE." John Hurt
