Burghfield Lockdown - statements from people taking part in the blockade.

“Although we’re told that the vote on new nuclear weapons will not be taken until 2016, we know that work has already started on their design. The money that is proposed to be spent on new nuclear weapons could pay for scrapping all student tuition fees for 30 years, or could fund all Accident and Emergency departments in the UK for over 40 years.”

Jan Jones from Pontardawe, a Wales Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament CND Cymru supporter

“The possession with intent to use Nuclear weapons destroys our humanity.
The people of Scotland, where I have lived for many years, know that. And
we are organising to insure that Scotland’s determined opposition to these
useless and unacceptable instruments of mass destruction is heard loud and
clear. So I am coming to the Burghfield blockade in solidarity with friends
who are equally determined that the UK must stop this madness and in the
hope that people across the country will wake up and join us and Vote only
for MPs who pledge to vote against the renewal of Trident in the next
Parliament. This election presents the best opportunity we have ever had to
rid the UK of the scourge of nuclear weapons. And if we can do it, that
will help provide the impetus for the global abolition of nuclear weapons
in short order.”

“This is the third witness we have made since January in our on-going challenge to the UKs nuclear weapons policy and Trident in particular. This is a critical time – the run -up to a General Election and also a time when decisions will be made in the months ahead as to whether to replace the existing Trident nuclear weapons programme.

“Christians must act now to make it clear that nuclear weapons have no place in maintaining true security for our country or our world. We write letters, we sign petition and sometimes we need to take direct action to interrupt the ‘business as usual’ of nuclear war preparations.”

Pat Gaffney, General Secretary of Pax Christi

“If fired, Trident would cause a humanitarian catastrophe with devastating consequences worldwide. By making nuclear warheads, knowing that they could be detonated with loss of millions of lives, Burghfield is contributing to crimes against humanity. Sustained nonviolent civil resistance is essential to stop this. Instead of carrying on with nuclear weapons and threats of mass murder, resources should be devoted to our real security needs, such as preventing the further destruction of our climate and environment. Our blockade at Burghfield is part of a global uprising of people power trying to ensure our survival on this planet.”

Angie Zelter, one of the organisers for Action AWE.

“We don’t want to suffer nuclear winter and radiation caused by British or other nuclear weapons. We support Scotland’s right to become nuclear free, and call on the UK to cancel Trident, stop threatening the world with accidental or intentional nuclear disaster, and support negotiations to ban and eliminate all nuclear weapons”

Tuuli Vuori, who has travelled to AWE Burghfield from Finland.

Unless the government promises that Burghfield will only dismantle warheads, and not make any more, we’re going to put our bodies in front of AWE Burghfield’s gates to prevent crimes against humanity. In 2016, the British Parliament will decide whether or not to waste billions of pounds on a new generation of nukes. We call on all election candidates to pledge to take the opportunity to scrap Trident in 2016 and join negotiations to ban and eliminate nuclear weapons globally.

Hannah Brock, a blockader from War Resisters’ International.

I am travelling to Burghfield to take part in this campaign because as non-violent activists, we believe non-violent actions to prevent war are important. Networking is crucial in our struggle; solidarity between persons is essential and proves that we’re not alone in our fight

Luis Tinoco, from Belgium.

“Spending £100 billion on replacing Trident is a catastrophic folly. I’m sure I am one of many who support the those, like Action-AWE, who campaign actively and imaginatively against it”

– Ken Loach

John Hurt

".....the government has pledged to rebuild a new generation of British nuclear weapons at enormous cost and at a time when social services budgets including those for health and education are being drastically cut. Having nuclear weapons doesn't make us safer, it just brings the possibility of nuclear conflict ever closer. We need to protect this planet not put it at even more risk of destruction. We all have a voice so please use yours and join me in supporting ACTION AWE." John Hurt
