Action round-up

In fine voice: On 28 April singers from Wales, Reading, Oxford & London converged on Newbury and then Aldermaston to make their feelings known in song. Report here: http://actionawe.org/protesters-sing-outside-awe/ - and in the local Hampshire press: http://www.thisishampshire.net/news/10384425.Protesters_sing_outside_AWE/

With love, for justice and peace: On 7 May Christian and Quaker peace activists from around the UK partially blocked the main gate at Burghfield, slowing traffic into the facility and causing a great deal of inconvenience. More here, including some handy tips for future blockaders: http://actionawe.org/blog-from-the-burghfield-blockade-of-7th-may-2013/

On 21 May the early morning Aldermaston picketers got out in unseasonably cool weather to make sure the message got to AWE in rush hour. Nice pic: http://actionawe.org/home-office-gate-picket-21st-may/

Singing again! On 15 June singers from around the UK raised their voices against Trident again, this time in Reading and at Burghfield. FIT turned out with cameras. Report describing Burghfield for future planning: http://actionawe.org/singers-attract-attention-in-reading-town-centre/

Silence is powerful: On 28 June 13 women from Women In Black, known for their weekly vigils encircling the statue of Edith Cavell in London, held a vigil at the roundabout at AWE Aldermaston. Beautiful photos: http://actionawe.org/women-in-black-wilpf-take-action-at-aldermaston/

Street action: On 6 July a group from Reading took to the streets with street theatre, music and poetry, to explain to passersby what their local nuclear weapons factory is up to http://actionawe.org/newbury-and-reading-public-engagement-day/

Stopping traffic: On 8 July 10 activists braved blasting sunshine and temperatures reaching 30 degrees to block Burghfield AWE for 3 hours, thank goodness for suncream and (sun) umbrellas! http://actionawe.org/trident-ploughshares-affinity-groups-blockade-awe-burghfield/

“Spending £100 billion on replacing Trident is a catastrophic folly. I’m sure I am one of many who support the those, like Action-AWE, who campaign actively and imaginatively against it”

– Ken Loach

John Hurt

".....the government has pledged to rebuild a new generation of British nuclear weapons at enormous cost and at a time when social services budgets including those for health and education are being drastically cut. Having nuclear weapons doesn't make us safer, it just brings the possibility of nuclear conflict ever closer. We need to protect this planet not put it at even more risk of destruction. We all have a voice so please use yours and join me in supporting ACTION AWE." John Hurt
