Places to stay near AWE

There are a few options for groups to stay in the area not too far from Aldermaston and Burghfield. A number of halls, church halls and Quaker Meeting Houses may be available from time to time. Email [email protected] for current details of those who may have accomodation available for ActionAWE activities.

Transport to Aldermaston or Burghfield could be directly to the sites by car, minibus, etc. or by train/bus to Newbury or Reading, then on to Mortimer (nearest train station to Burghfield), or Aldermaston village (nearest train station to AWE Aldermaston). It is also possible to get a bus from Newbury or Reading to Aldermaston or Burghfield (see information on Transport).

Camping: A good option for groups of almost any size is camping at Braziers Park who have offered use of their camping field for the duration of Action AWE – at a cost of £8.00 per person per night - £5.00 for those with income below £15,000. It is a basic site so would be best in warmer weather.

Booking is essential http://www.braziers.org.uk/

Braziers Park is north of Reading off the A4047 and around ½ hour from Aldermaston via Pangbourne /Theale.

It is possible to get by bus to/from Reading Station on X39/X40 see Braziers website for details.

YHA: Streatley Youth Hostel is open all year. Drive south from Streatley on A417 to A4 at Theale. Limited bus service to Reading station from here but returning is more of a problem as last buses are early in the day.

Ken Loach

“Spending £100 billion on replacing Trident is a catastrophic folly. I’m sure I am one of many who support the those, like Action-AWE, who campaign actively and imaginatively against it”

– Ken Loach

John Hurt

".....the government has pledged to rebuild a new generation of British nuclear weapons at enormous cost and at a time when social services budgets including those for health and education are being drastically cut. Having nuclear weapons doesn't make us safer, it just brings the possibility of nuclear conflict ever closer. We need to protect this planet not put it at even more risk of destruction. We all have a voice so please use yours and join me in supporting ACTION AWE." John Hurt
